The culture of France has been shaped by geography, by historical events, and by foreign and internal forces and groups. France, and in particular Paris, has played an important role as a center of high culture since the 17th century and from the 19th century on, worldwide. From the late 19th century, France has also played an important role in cinema, fashion, cuisine, literature, technology, social science and mathematics. The importance of French culture has waxed and waned over the centuries, depending on its economic, political and military importance. French culture today is marked both by great regional and socioeconomic differences and strong unifying tendencies.
France generally enjoys cool winters and mild summers except along the Mediterranean where mild winters and hot summers are the norm.
Average winter temperatures range from 32° F to 46° F and average summer temperatures from 61° F to 75° F. For the most warmth and sunshine go to the south of the country. The Provence and Languedoc regions are characterized by mild winters and blisteringly hot summers.
Along the north and central regions, Paris has cool and fairly rainy winters, though summers here are usually hot.
Winters are a lot colder in the eastern regions of Alsace-Lorraine and in the mountainous regions of the Alps, the Pyrénées, and the Massif Central.
The French capital, Paris, is among the top ten most expensive cities in the world especially when compare cities like Bangkok. Living here offers up a huge amount of opportunity for great culture and cuisine – but it comes at a cost. However, if you look beyond the capital, prices start to fall dramatically.
Choose to live in Nantes, for example, and you’ll find that rents – a huge driver of your overall cost of living – are under half the price of those in Paris. Similarly, Marseille is one France’s cheaper cities but still has a huge amount to offer. Or get off the beaten track and leave the cities behind entirely for an even lower cost of living.
