Destination Guide for Australia

Relocating from The Kingdom of Thailand to Australia

Life in Australia

Weather

Australia’s climate is governed mostly by its size and by the hot, sinking air of the subtropical high-pressure belt (subtropical ridge). This moves north-west and north-east with the seasons. The climate is variable, with frequent droughts lasting several seasons, thought to be caused in part by the El Niño-Southern Oscillation. Australia has a wide variety of climates due to its large geographical size. The largest part of Australia is desert or semi-arid. Only the south-east and south-west corners have a temperate climate and moderately fertile soil. The northern part of the country has a tropical climate, varying between grasslands and desert. Australia holds many heat-related records: the continent has the hottest extended region year-round, the areas with the hottest summer climate, and the highest sunshine duration.

With its great weather, cosmopolitan cities, diverse natural landscapes and relaxed lifestyle, it’s no wonder that Australia remains a top pick for expats.

Eating at Home & Dining Out

Groceries are more expensive in Australia than many other major cities around the world and especially when compared to Bangkok or Phuket Thailand.

A dozen eggs will be about AUD $5.00. A loaf of bread around AUD $2.73 and a 2-litre bottle of milk is AUD $1.66. A weekly shop can range from AUD $80 to AUD $300.

A meal for two at a mid-range restaurant in Sydney will cost upwards of AUD $70, compared to about AUD $108 in New York or London. On average you’ll pay AUD $11 for a Big Mac Meal, AUD $7 for a beer and AUD $3.50 for a coffee. But you can be guaranteed a good one because Australians take their coffee seriously.

Customs Regulations for Returning Citizens

Much like the USA, Australia is a large country with much more restrictions in place when compared with moving to Thailand and other countries. The rules and regulations are more extensive and detailed. Don’t let all this information overwhelm you though. If it’s too much to take in, then please let our Moving Specialists help you. Again, this is only for your reference and you are not expected to memorize it all.

That said, here are a few of the main points summed up for which you should be made aware of:

Importation of House Hold Goods

Used personal and household effects allowed tax- and duty-free entry if owned and used overseas by the importer for 12 months or longer. All goods must be in quantities that reflect a normal household.

Required Documentation

Following documents are required for import of household goods and personal effects into the Australia:

  • Completed Unaccompanied personal Effects Statement (Customs form #B534)
  • Completed Authority to Act Form
  • Copies of ID page of passport of importer
  • Purchase receipts or proof of value for any items that have less than 12 months ownership and use by the importer.
  • Descriptive inventory of goods in English.

For more detailed information, please view the full Customs Regulations Guide from FIDI. Please also contact one of our move specialists who are here to help you with importing your house hold goods into Australia from Thailand.

Motor Vehicles

The importation of motor vehicles into Australia is strictly controlled and there are no duty/GST free concessions available. This means that all motor vehicles, including motorcycles, will be subject to duty and/or GST which will be calculated on the value of the vehicle. In addition, high value vehicles will attract a Luxury Car Tax. There are also strict regulations for the registration of motor vehicles, including motorcycles, for road use in Australia.

Pets

All animals imported to Australia must meet the requirements of the Australian Department of Agriculture and Water Resources and will be quarantined upon arrival.

Domestic dogs and cats can be imported from approved countries however these are subject, with the exception from New Zealand, to importation permits. They will also be subjected to a specified quarantine period upon arrival in Australia. Direct importation of domestic Dogs and Cats from some nominated countries is totally prohibited.
